The Legendary Williams, Receives Wild Card for Her Initial Australian Open in Five Years.

Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Return to Melbourne Park

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old icon will make a return at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the second round before exiting in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Australian Summer

Venus had earlier stated in November her intention to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a special entry, a fortnight before the Melbourne event. The Australian Open added that Williams is scheduled to participate in Australia's Hobart International a following week, immediately prior to the start of play at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I’m excited to return in Australia and eagerly anticipating competing during the Australian summer," Venus stated. "I have experienced so many incredible moments there, and I’m thankful for the chance to return to a place that has been so significant to my professional journey."

Williams' career statistics at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 losses. This year will mark the twenty-second occasion she has appeared in the primary tournament field.

Setting a New Record

The tournament pointed out that Williams is poised to be the oldest woman to compete in an Open's singles competition, eclipsing the record previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.

Latest Personal Milestone

In the final days of December, Williams married Danish-born model and actor Andrea Preti in Florida's Palm Beach.
