Among every mature cartoon movies I have personally watched, no other has stuck with me as much as the dread-soaked finale of a explicitly bloody and overwhelingly transgressive film from 2022 The Unicorn Wars.
In the year 2015, the Spain-based writer-director developed a dark, melancholy , frequently brutal universe that included several minor , desolate twinges of optimism.
While The Unicorn Wars seems like it came from a desire to expand the medium further, the director stated that it was actually an effort to convey a widespread, multicultural message concerning “the mutual source of every conflict.”
This theme is conveyed through a band of colorful pastel bears , openly based on a popular series of cuddly figures.
Maturing in a culture focused on aggression and the defense industry, a lot of these creatures are consumed by killing the mythical beasts, because of a religious scripture which states the bears they were once masters of the woodland, before these creatures forced them out.
Others haven’t fully fallen for the propaganda, , choose to try out narcotics or fornicate in the woods.
In contrast to their friendly counterparts, these bright beings show sexual organs , obvious sex drives.
For one notably brutal, cynical bear, the character Bluey, the war with unicorns becomes a path to control — and specifically to supremacy above his softer, nicer brother the character Tubby.
This bear is a bully and a seeming antisocial figure , and while horror dominates his squad and kills his fellow soldiers one by one, he takes progressively influence for himself, in increasingly gory, damaging approaches.
Meanwhile, the horned creatures are suffering their own terror, as an expanding, harmful creature in their habitat.
“Initially, it feels like a lighthearted film,” the filmmaker commented. “However it evolves into a more intense and melancholic movie. And in the finale, it transforms into a horror film.”
Unicorn Wars starts out feeling a bit like one of the more whimsical films from a legendary filmmaker, that uncover a mischievous joy in permitting drawn beings curse, shoot each other, or engage sexually.
Then it turns into more akin to a bleaker work from that director, featuring progressively explicit brutality and a tangible connection to the real horror of war.
By the end, it is an outright theatrical horror carnage.
The fear that turns this a perfect Halloween movie kicks in a lot earlier than indicated.
Unicorn Wars is suited for the most dedicated gorehounds, for fans of intense movies who want to watch a movie they have not seen on-screen before, and who can handle a story that pulls unflinching brutality.
See it in a dimly lit space free from interruptions, and the finale will crawl into your mind and linger.
