Whenever a prominent honors show nears, one notices a demand for introducing fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans with niche passions.
My colleague made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
- Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
- Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games worldwide and have been for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
