Rybakina Upsets Sabalenka to Claim Historic £4m Reward
Rybakina earned her forty-fifth hard court victory of 2025
Rybakina claimed the greatest prize in WTA history by defeating top-ranked Sabalenka in two sets at the tournament.
The 26-year-old delivered a brilliant display to defeat four-times Grand Slam champion Sabalenka 6-3 7-6 (7-0) in Saudi Arabia.
Since each competitor advanced through the tournament undefeated, the purse on offer was a record-breaking almost £4 million – the largest prize offering in women's tennis the sport's history.
The reward tops the £3.74 million Sabalenka received for claiming September's New York major, which was the most lucrative major tournament in 2025.
"It's been an fantastic tournament," stated Rybakina.
"Truly didn't expect any result so to win the title was just incredible."
"Let me offer congratulations to Aryna for holding the top spot for a second year running, it's an incredible achievement."
Rybakina, who was the sixth-ranked player, hit sixteen winners during a dominant first-set display.
Rybakina fended off a couple of chances before winning every point in the sixth game of the set to go a break up and served out to seal the first set.
As the second set progressed, Sabalenka saved another two break points at 4-4 to swing the momentum in her favor.
However, having worked so hard to upset Rybakina's rhythm, Sabalenka let her opponent off the hook by wasting a pair of set points in the next game to tie the second set at 5-5.
Her inability to level the match impacted her tie-break play, with Rybakina winning all seven points to take home the championship.
This win, her sixth triumph over her rival, means Rybakina will move up one spot in the rankings to number five in the world rankings.
A distraught Sabalenka was seen crying as she sat with her coaching team shortly after the match.
"That was not the finest display from me in this match but Rybakina you were certainly the superior competitor," Sabalenka addressed the crowd.
"You really smashed me out of the court. I'm pleased to see you play your best tennis. Celebrate this stunning title."
