Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD released video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims according to reports.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
He joined the Jets as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on early August and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while working his way back.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in March.
