Milano Hockey Venue Setbacks Could Force NHL Stars on Unproven Playing Surface
Forget about poor conditions. Currently, there’s no ice.
As NHL athletes gearing up to return to the Olympic Games for the initial occasion in more than a ten years, building work on the primary hockey arena for the Milano Cortina Games is going down to the wire.
Officials announced on Wednesday that the main trial competition for the 16,000-seat Santagiulia arena originally planned for December has been relocated to a more compact venue – and that no new test event has been arranged yet.
The issue creates the possibility that there may not be a match held in the main arena until the competition begins for the women's initial games at the Olympics on 5 February – one day before the opening ceremony.
“The timeline will be very close to the start of the games, the timeline is highly compressed. But we knew that,” Milano Cortina local organizing committee CEO Andrea Varnier stated recently.
The event that was supposed to evaluate the Santagiulia ice was a segment of the under-20 world championship from 8-14 December. That event has been moved to the Rho Fair hockey venue, which is being set up inside a giant exhibition hall on the outskirts of Milan and will host secondary matches during the games.
Usually, freshly built Olympic facilities are trialled at least the year before to holding podium competitions. And with a sizable hockey arena, it’s not only about the playing surface and ensuring that the rink is ready and secure. It’s also about testing concession stands, restrooms and everything else inside a newly constructed modern stadium.
The Santagiulia venue, which is being built by a commercial firm, is scheduled to become the nation's biggest covered stadium. For after the Olympics, it’s being eyed as a potential upcoming venue of the ATP Tour Finals tennis tournament.
In spite of the postponements and worries, high-priced passes are already being sold for matches at the Santagiulia arena. Seats for the men’s gold medal final on 22 February – the closing day of the Olympics – are going for as much as €1,400 (more than $1,600). This exceeds the price of any other sports event at the Milano Cortina Games. Solely passes for the inaugural and final events are priced higher.
The comeback of NHL stars at the Olympics was revealed in February of last year, with the premier hockey league allowing its players to compete in the Winter Olympics for the initial occasion since 2014 in Sochi.
Men's Olympic hockey tournament is scheduled to run from 11-22 February. The women’s tournament runs from 5-19 February.
