Man Who Reached For Ariana Grande at Red Carpet Event Barred from Singapore
An Australian man who vaulted over a barricade and touched Hollywood star Ariana Grande has been expelled and prohibited from Singapore.
The man, 26, was given a sentence to nine days in prison for disrupting public order and has now been "prohibited from returning to Singapore," the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority told Singaporean press.
Wen pushed through camera crews and approached aggressively the celebrity, who was participating in the Asian premier for Wicked: For Good on 13 November. Co-performer Cynthia Erivo pulled him back from Grande.
He has a background of causing disturbances at events and high-profile gatherings, including jumping on stage at a Katy Perry performance in Sydney in this summer.
The occurrence provoked strong reactions in Singapore, with numerous people claiming he of triggering past trauma for the singer.
The singer has discussed experiencing PTSD after a suicide bomb attack at her show in Manchester in several years ago took the lives of 22 individuals and injured hundreds.
In the legal process, the court heard he had attempted to intrude on the movie's debut multiple times, according to local news sources.
He then made a follow-up try to breach security. Event security stopped him and held him in place.
The man subsequently shared recordings appreciating the celebrity for letting him on the carpet and said he was "released."
Police took him into custody the next day and accused him with public nuisance, to which he confessed.
The Court Judge Christopher Goh was quoted by a news outlet as stating that he was looking for publicity, adding that he was mistaken to believe he would not suffer any consequences.
The actress has not spoken about the case.
Erivo spoke about the situation to NBC, saying that she "just wanted to ensure my friend was protected."
"I'm sure he had no intention to us injury, but you cannot be certain with those things, and I aimed to confirm that she was OK. That was my initial reaction," she commented.
