New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this Tuesday, responding to recent criticism from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared via social media. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
The quarterback's remarks directly referenced the infamous bounty scandal issue from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
During that period, the league found that the Saints had rewarded players for delivering hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the league for a full year.
The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered comments after the Broncos' remarkable 33-32 win over the New York. Payton suggested that the team had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Additionally, Payton implied that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson over Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.
Had Wilson remained on the team by March 2024, his $37M pay for 2025 would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was released, marking the ugly split between the player and his mentor.
