We had not thoroughly investigated this region in the game's history too much, explained the development lead. Starting from the established world, if you head eastward, you start approaching the Washington DC area. That region has been thoroughly developed. The Ohio territory hasn't really been developed significantly. So, Fallout 76 being occurring before in the series history provides us various creative opportunities. The team wanted to discover what's happening in Ohio!

Finding Influence from Previous Games

What immediately catches attention about Fallout 76's version of Ohio is that it's presented as a dry environment. This could appear unexpected given the typical climate of Ohio, but there's a intentional rationale for this artistic direction: The appearance was significantly drawn by the Capital Wasteland and the Mojave Desert.

Instead of exactly duplicating features from classic installments, the designers prioritized embodying the essential spirit of those games within Burning Springs.

The direction I communicated to the team when we started development on the new region was: It requires arid landscapes, Deathclaws, and plenty of enemies. Those are the key components that establish the unique atmosphere of those titles, and so I wanted that mirrored here.

Television Series Incorporation

The popularity of the Fallout television series generated a noticeable rise in user engagement for the online game, with accounts indicating a six or seven player growth. The studio understood they needed to leverage this situation, but didn't have the sufficient timeline to implement a complete integration instantly.

The method came through organic development when the team identified the perfect connection with The Ghoul, who becomes a bounty hunting vendor within the recent update.

We were figuring out what this new region would include, what the characteristic feel would be, and then what the primary feature of the new region would evolve into, that's bounty hunting, commented the creative director. What person more appropriate to represent bounty hunting than this character? He being a knowledgeable admirer of the series too, he was very eager to collaborate with us and make this happen. So it wasn't planned initially, but it developed through natural progression of the content.

Future Plans

This expansion won't be the final major update for the multiplayer experience. The development team is actively creating on the first substantial future expansion and preparing additional content continuing as far as the 72nd update.

At one point a time where we couldn't imagine there would possibly exist an seventy-sixth expansion, commented the production director. Now we're at a stage where things are so great, for both the show and the game. It's actually quite remarkable to think that there's an update 76 that will then sync up with, you know, who knows!
