The deceased of a 34-year-old woman and her young daughter, 10 have been found inside freezers in an flat in western Austria.
The deceased, a Syrian woman and her daughter, who had been unaccounted for for several months, were found on Friday. The cooling units were concealed behind a plasterboard wall in the apartment, located in the city of Innsbruck.
A pair of males, a Austrian man, 55 and his brother aged 53, were detained in June. The older man, a work associate of the female victim, stated to law enforcement last week that there had been an incident—but disputed homicide.
Informing reporters recently, a spokesman for the public prosecutor's office said the brothers were being detained on "serious suspicion of intentional killing".
Personal details of those implicated have been withheld by police, in compliance with local legislation.
Their going missing was originally brought to light by the cousin of the mother, who resides in Germany, on July 25, 2024.
Police stated the woman's colleague told them at the time she had taken an extended trip with her child to see her family in the nation of Turkey.
The mother's debit card was then found to have been used abroad on multiple occasions.
Yet when officers examined the mother's apartment, her cellphone was found.
A witness also reported hearing a disturbing sound in the apartment, and shouts of "mum" on the day the pair were presumed to have gone missing.
A wider official inquiry was started, with officers uncovering multiple communications originating from the mother's device—among them a notice of quitting to her employer and messages to the male associate.
Officials said a amount in the thousands was also transferred to the man.
Katja Tersch informed the press on recently that a storage unit had been secured before the mother and child went missing and a freezer had been positioned inside.
The male siblings extracted the cooling unit from the unit on the very day the woman and her child disappeared, the official revealed. And a shortly afterward, they acquired a second unit.
Investigators state they consider this suggests the demise were planned in advance.
"The cause of death could not be determined due to the advanced decay of the victims," the official stated.
The prosecutor's spokesman—from the legal authorities—noted the precise timeline is yet to be determined, but the victims were expertly concealed and went unnoticed during a earlier inspection.
While the men were arrested in June, it was not until 12 November that the 55-year-old admitted to an event and to storing the victims. He rejects any intent to kill, officials stated.
At the same time, his younger brother confessed to a attempt to hide evidence but denied involvement in a murder.
The brothers are currently in detention before court proceedings in prisons in Innsbruck and Salzburg, approximately 189 kilometers away from each other.
Via a shared communication, Austria's Minister for Women and Justice Minister stated the "reported homicide of mother and child... represents the swift and cruel conclusion of a mother and child and uncovers a cruel system".
"Women and girls are being killed due to the sole reason that they are female," they continued.
"Gender-based killings are a profoundly embedded and widespread concern that we must combat firmly."
